Hermoso failing to live up to your expectations of how a victim should behave doesn’t stop her being right
Now, in the latest twist, Spanish media is reporting thatwith Fifa of Hermoso on a bus with her teammates dissecting the kiss. In the short clip, Hermoso takes a swig from a bottle and laughs at a side-by-side photo comparison of the Rubiales kiss and a kiss between footballer Iker Casillas and sports journalist Sara Carbonero .
Presumably, Rubiales is hoping that this might be evidence in his defence, to exonerate him from the mob of “false feminists”. Proof perhaps that Hermoso saw it as a joke or was at least unbothered enough to be able to drink and celebrate with her teammates following the biggest sporting achievement of her career? Rather than, say, huddle sobbing in the corner.
Secondly – although many will surely try – trying to interpet how someone is feeling internally, their innermost thoughts and feelings, based on a grainy video of them in public, rather than listening to her extensive statement, seems unwise. to be behaving is irrelevant – she says she did not consent to what happened and that is the crux of the issue. In fact, that is the end of it.
And yet we should not be surprised by this attempt to discredit Hermoso – society remains obsessed with monitoring women’s behaviour when it comes to sexual violence. We are at pains to scrutinise how they behave before it happens that might make them culpable and then how they behave after it happens to excuse perpetrators.
