On this week’s episode, Jeremy Strong joins littlegoldmen to discuss the classic literature that inspired Kendall Roy’s torment
. It was the first film released by an out, Black lesbian filmmaker, and it remains fresh and relevant 24 years later—partly thanks to Dunye’s incisive examination of racial stereotypes in classic Hollywood films, and partly, as with any vintage movie, thanks to the clothes.
Anyway, that’s a long-winded way of saying that I think there was something about Kendall that felt frightening to me because it was going to require a different way of working. Kendall feels as real to me as Jeremy does, which is maybe a crazy thing to say. But the great thing about long-form television is it’s almost like a play. I mean, a play you get to kind of step into the river and you take the journey of the character every night.
I guess it felt like that thing that was sitting on Henry’s heart so heavily that after a thousand years he couldn’t make good. It felt like last season had to be about making that weight palpable and so heavy that I would be nearly crushed by it. As if the whole season really hinged on this reversal happening in the last minute and a half, as if he’s lying, playing dead—and then pounces.
