New York Jets legend Joe Namath left no room for interpretation: he's not a fan of Zach Wilson, the coaching staff, or the front office. Wednesday Robert Saleh responded.
It’s the last thing Saleh needed as he tries to keep his team together after losing quarterback Aaron Rodgers four snaps into Week 1, and as he continues to adamantly claim that Wilson gives them the best chance to win. Jets fans are already angry after 12 straight years of missing the playoffs. And they’ve already been extremely vocal about their lack of belief in Wilson.
“I haven’t spoken to Joe,” Saleh said. “But obviously Joe is an icon, a hall of famer, and a well-respected individual in this organization. The door is always open for him to walk in. And my office is always open for him. But we’ll agree to disagree with his comments, but he is entitled to those comments.”
Namath is the gold standard for this franchise. He represents all that is possible when talent and swagger come together at the right time. He cemented his iconic status nearly 55 years ago, when he guaranteed victory in the Jets one-and-only Super Bowl appearance, and delivered a Lombardi Trophy along with one of greatest upsets in football history over the Colts.
Perhaps Namath will visit, and Saleh can sell him on his vision the way he did another prominent figure from the Jets’ more recent past: Rex Ryan ripped the Jets and Saleh early in the new coach’s first year with the team, only to reverse course after a private conversation with Saleh.
