As warning signs flash for Democrats, Lina Hidalgo targets Black, Latino voters in final days of election
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo talks to people after taking a group photograph at Una Tarde en East End, a rally for Latino officials and candidates, Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, at Historic Firehouse No. 2 in Houston.
“Why is the first lady of the United States of America in Harris County stumping for a county judge candidate?” Hidalgo said before a crowd of Latino activists and elected officials at Leonel Castillo Community Center in Northside. “She could be anywhere else in this nation. Why is she here? Because the Biden administration understands that democracy, truth, decency are on the ballot.”
So far, turnout was down 18 and 17 percent among Black and Latino voters, respectively, compared to 2018, according to data compiled by TargetSmart, a Democratic political data and polling firm. About 21 percent fewer young voters — those between the ages of 18 and 39 — had turned out than at the same point four years ago, while turnout was down just 2 percent among voters 65 and older.
“The community is going to continue to respond to our efforts and our commitments to neighborhoods that have historically been underserved, underrepresented and under-invested in,” Garcia said after campaigning with Hidalgo and Biden at the Northside event. Law enforcement agencies in Harris County reported a 65 percent spike in homicides from 2018 to 2021, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s “,” which collects data from local law enforcement. Across all of Harris County, including Houston and the other incorporated cities, authorities recorded 632 homicides last year, up from 383 in 2018.
