On McGuinness’s watch, Donegal have had training Saturdays that started at 9.30am and finished at 6.30pm
Jim McGUINNESS thinks it was 1991, but he’s not sure. It might have been 1992 — the year he won his All-Ireland medal as an 18-year-old panellist.
“He handed it to me and said he thought I was going to be a coach and would get use out of it,’’ recalled McGuinness. McGuinness is back where it all began for him. Back with Donegal. Back in Gaelic football. When the dust settles on this season, we might hear more about the work the players put in since he returned to the helm.
Already, the message was out. The circle will remain unbroken. Neil is now coaching alongside McGuinness. Eamon does bits and pieces in the media, including a column with the Irish Daily Star. Then they try and replicate their ideas on the pitch. It is painstaking, often laborious work. And they have a rule of thumb that a move won’t be tried in a game until it’s been honed at least six times in training.
Those games against Down and Laois were two they would have been targeting once the fixture list came out. But the reaction showed the steel in this Donegal team. But Donegal came storming back into the game, winning out by 10 points at the finish. This year, they were staring down the barrel of the gun against Tyrone and Armagh but came back to win.
