Jimmy Shane won his seventh driver’s championship Saturday while driving Miss Homestreet to victory in the first half of the annual Unlimited Hydroplane races on east Mission Bay.
He opened the Saturday Showdown by driving the U-1 to victory over Dustin Echols and the U-40 Miss Beacon Plumbing in a two-lap match race. Shane averaged 159.131 mph for the two-lap race. The second match race saw defending San Diego winner and national champion J. Michael Kelly drive the U-9 Miss Tri-Cities to victory over Jeff Bernard and the U-91 Miss Goodman Real Estate. Bernard then won the last-chance qualifying heat.Shane finished Saturday averaging 155.
On Friday, Shane turned a lap around the 2½-mile Bill Muncey Memorial Course at 165.636 mph. That was the fastest lap on the salt-water course between Fiesta Island and East Vacation Isle since fuel restrictions were imposed. Today will feature two, three-lap heats involving all the available Unlimiteds with the season-ending, five-lap HomeStreet Bank Bayfair Cup race starting around 4 p.m.
