Jobless claims jump in latest week to 261,000 — highest level since October 2021
The numbers: The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits in early June jumped to a 21-month high of 261,000, but most of the increase took place in Ohio and California. Most other states showed little change.
Layoffs rose early in the year and pushed jobless claims above 200,000, but until this week, Jobless claims have moved sideways since the spring.
