Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden will travel on Thursday to Kenosha, Wis., a city gripped by social unrest after the police shooting of Jacob Blake as violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement have emerged as a flashpoint in the 2020 election.
Mr. Biden plans to meet with the family of Mr. Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, during his visit to the embattled city, as well as with community and business leaders and law-enforcement personnel. His trip comes two days after President Trump toured Kenosha amid a debate between the two candidates over racial justice andMr. Biden told reporters he hoped to promote unity while in Kenosha, adding there had been “an overwhelming request” that he travel to the city.
“We’ve got to heal. We’ve got to put things together and bring people together,” Mr. Biden said at a Wednesday press conference in Wilmington, Del. “So my purpose in going will be to do just that—be a positive influence on what’s going on, talk about what needs to be done and try to see if there’s a beginning of a mechanism to bring the folks together.”
Mr. Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, have said the officer who shot Mr. Blake should be charged.
