John Bolton is not running for office himself, but he says he wants to devote his energy to helping Republicans maintain control of the U.S. Senate.

But he expressed concerns that"the effect of Trump on the electorate, even if he wins ... may be negative enough to sink enough Republican Senate candidates" and cost the GOP control of that chamber. Republicans hold 53 of the Senate's 100 seats.For vulnerable GOP senators,"the most important thing to their reelection is a strong performance by Trump in their state," he said.

"Is he going to solicit the 5% of Republicans who say they don’t support the president? He’s fishing in a very small pond," Schlapp said.
