First, he was making headlines for saying outright that he didn’t like, he has a different opinion, namely about Kylo and Rey ending up as the central couple of the franchise, however briefly.fans deemed “Reylos,” a group who has been pulling for Rey and Kylo Ren to get together since the first film.
Meanwhile, John Boyega, like many of us, remembers that at one point, it sure seemed like perhaps Finn and Rey would end up together instead. Boyega has cracked jokes about this publicly afterpremiered, some in questionable taste , some that were less controversial, unless you were a Reylo, like the one below:
This set off a full on flame war as Reylos attacked Boyega for all this. Reylos claim he was being sexist, Boyega defenders note that he has had to deal with racist remarks about his possible relationship with Rey for three films now. But things got weird, as at one point, a Twitter account with the avatar of a black woman called out Boyega as being ashamed of him and saying he was disgusting and representing them poorly.
Now, the final blow has come from Boyega, as he posted a short video on his Instagram taking the most choice tweets from this entire controversy, setting a scene to music and showing him dancing and slashing and driving over each tweet, including the one I just mentioned, in what is his most public dunk on the Reylo fanbase yet. Needless to say they’re not amused.
All of this is highly unusual as you rarely see high profile actors and fans go head to head this intensely. Boyega comes off as being amused by all of this while his detractors are shocked he’s putting this much effort into his side of the flame war. Is this theidea on his part? That’s debatable, I suppose, but from the outside, there is something somewhat gratifying about seeing a celebrity take on legions of their haters directly like this.
