Hulan Barnett says he wants to make incumbent ‘uncomfortable’ with his Facebook comments
The eighth-grade math teacher challenging Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia in the June 7 primary election bluntly describes the incumbent’s tenure in office as “the 24 year term of THE RAT.”
Gioia, an outspoken progressive hoping to represent the county’s western region for another four-year term. shared screenshots of the comments with this news organization, Gioia doesn’t apologize for the county’s controversial COVID-related health mandates, including one that had required certain businesses to check patrons for proof of vaccination to enter.
“When you cross the line in forcing children in schools , that’s when I have a problem,” Barnett said.Barnett also accuses Gioia of not having done enough to reduce traffic in Richmond, either by installing red-light cameras or paying for more law enforcement to crack down on drivers doing “doughnuts.”
But during a recent board discussion, he supported putting more money into the sheriff’s budget. Gioia says he has tried to find a balance between progressive ideas and pragmatic law enforcement measures.
