A son of Alabama sharecroppers who became a lion of the civil rights movement, Lewis will be honored over six days in five cities, from Troy, Alabama, to Washington, D.C.
A celebration of the life of Rep. John Lewis, a hero of the civil rights movement and longtime Georgia congressman, began Saturday in Troy, Alabama. The memorials will continue over six days in five cities.
Lewis, who represented Atlanta in the House of Representatives, died July 17 after a monthslong battle with cancer. He was 80. Another sister, Ethel Tyner, recalled how she and her family were all farmers and that Lewis — whom the family called Robert — began preaching at a young age.
