Despite recent reports to the contrary, John Singleton is still alive and at a Los Angeles hospital more than a week after suffering a stroke. The director’s spokesperson Shannon Barr confirmed in a statement to Newsweek that Singleton is still alive and currently on life support, noting earlier death reports were “inaccurate.”
The Oscar and Emmy-nominated director suffered a stroke on April 17. Singleton was reportedly returning to Los Angeles from Costa Rica when he first complained about suffering weakness in his leg. He was taken to a hospital in Los Angeles where he suffered a stroke shortly after. “John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care,” Singleton’s reps said in a statement to Newsweek on April 20.
Singleton’s health continued to worsen. The 51-year-old fell into a coma eight days after the stroke and has since been placed on life support. The father of four made his first big splash on the Hollywood scene with is highly acclaimed film, Boyz n the Hood, starring Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Morris Chestnut. The movie went on to land Singleton his first Oscar nominations in 1992 for Best Director and Best Screenplay—making him the youngest filmmaker in history to score a nom in those categories. He was 23 years old at the time.
