THE First Minister has urged Sir Keir Starmer to work with him to eradicate child poverty by changing course on a range of policies.
leader to meet to discuss how to make progress, urging him to reverse his acceptance of current UK Government welfare and spending plans.
“These policies are keeping thousands of children in Scotland in poverty – and I have invited Sir Keir to meet with me at Bute House to discuss the need to change approach and to ask that he commits to working with me to eradicate child poverty. For too long, the relationship between the Scottish and UK Governments has not been a positive one, given the very clear policy disagreements between us. I would like that to change, and for us to be able to forge a constructive working relationship.
There is clear action that could be taken immediately by a government you lead. For example, recent analysis by the Scottish Government has estimated that reversing the two child limit and reintroducing the Family Element in Universal Credit would lift 10,000 children out of poverty in Scotland. It would be beneficial to discuss this with you face to face and I would be happy to meet you in early course to allow us to make swift progress. We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
