Jonathan Majors’s starring role in HBO’s timely new drama LovecraftHBO has put him at the center of the conversation. But this summer, he’s figuring out life on his own.
“This quarantine has made us see what we’re made out of, physically, spiritually, emotionally, economically,” says Majors. “But you have to continue to create and stay open.
During the lockdown, he has been getting up not long after four in the morning to walk his dogs and then head to a park to work out with artist friends with whom he has been “communing” during his stay. He has been meditating, reading—James Baldwin, Albert Camus—listening to the news, and Zoom-ing with family, including his seven-year-old daughter, whom he’s nicknamed Elmo. He met her mother in drama school, and his daughter was born when he was 22.
Majors, who still addresses women as “Ma’am,” grew up between his mother’s apartment in Dallas and his grandparents’ farm in Riesel, Texas. His father and grandfather were both military veterans. He was a sensitive boy who liked to explore his grandfather’s expansive book collection, watch scary things on TV likewith his older sister and younger brother, and throw glass bottles and have mud-pie fights on the farm.
