Jose Altuve feels like a rookie again as he makes early return from broken thumb
On Friday afternoon, Houston’s baseball franchise regained its face and Jose Altuve relived the day he first became a major leaguer., Altuve made his 2023 season debut for the Astros in Friday’s series opener against the A’s. The day began like countless others in his illustrious career.
“I was thinking early June because that's what the doctor said,” Altuve said. “I didn't want to put any expectations on my health but you know, I feel obviously really happy that it's a little earlier than that. … I think we worked really hard to get to this point. I thanked all the training coaches and everybody that really helped me to get here. The doctor, teammates. So I'm really happy to be back.
In Altuve’s absence, the Astros played to a 24-19 record. They were neither dismal nor dominant but skewed toward the former, batting .244 but slugging just .377 with 38 home runs and a .689 OPS. Baker toyed with different batting orders to select a suitable substitute for Altuve’s leadoff spot and quickly settled on utility man Mauricio Dubón, who also filled in at second base for 36 of the 43 games that Altuve missed.
