José Ramírez belted a pair of home runs and the Guardians scored in each of the first four innings Wednesday to grab an 8-3 victory against the Royals at Progressive Field. Catch the highlights:
The Guardians evened their record at 51-51 and moved within two games of Minnesota in the American League Central Division race. The Twins fell to the Mariners, 8-7 Wednesday at Target Field.
Ramírez, who added a base hit in the sixth for his ninth game of at least three hits this season, scored three times to give him 761 career runs. He passed Hal Trosky for 11th on the franchise’s all-time list and is 67 behind Larry Doby for 10th.“He doesn’t strike out, and he battles regardless of how good your stuff is,” Quatraro said. “He doesn’t care. He’s confident in what he does. He takes good at-bats. If he has a rough day or a rough couple of days it doesn’t get him down.
Rookie Gavin Williams tossed four scoreless innings, but exited before the fifth after throwing 87 pitches. It marked the second straight outing where the right-hander labored early, but was able to limit the opposition’s scoring chances. Guardians manager Terry Francona said Williams, who dealt with the early stages of a blister in his previous start, managed his outing well despite Royals hitters driving his pitch count up in the first.
Steven Kwan added to Cleveland’s lead in the second with an RBI bloop single to center. Gabriel Arias, who led off the inning with a base hit and stole second, scored on Kwan’s hit ahead of a throw from Kyle Isbel in center. Arias was originally ruled out as he slid between the legs of catcher Freddy Fermin, but home plate umpire Pat Hoberg’s call was overturned after a challenge by Francona, giving Cleveland a 3-0 lead.
