LookingForAlaska showrunner Josh Schwartz says he didn’t want to replicate the John Green book’s Manic Pixie Dream Girl so added scenes to help Alaska “stand on her own as a fully realized character, independent of how these guys saw her.”
When Schwartz started out, he was only a decade older than his teenage characters. As the gulf between Schwartz and his creations grows ever larger, he finds himself leaning more on his actors to “tell me if something feels like bullshit…. Like, Yeah, this joke feels a little dated now. Like, People are more woke than this now. This doesn’t feel like what a young person would say in this moment,” he said. “I really trust them with that....
Because his target audience is so young, Schwartz has also watched his potential viewers ditch broadcast television for streaming. He recalled the puzzlement that greetedwhich was a cultural phenomenon yet had low linear ratings. “The discovery was: Oh, people are watching the show...they’re just watching it online!”is Schwartz’s second Hulu production, and he loves the less constricting network notes and the more fluid episode lengths.
When I asked Schwartz if he ever thought about moving away from teen characters, his face broke into a smile. “What’s my dad show?” he asked. “I don't know! I probably should evolve at some point! I guess now that [Alaska] is behind me, and this has been such a long journey, that maybe...I don’t want to ever say it’s the last of anything. Because I do find myself just drawn back in, and also people know us for these kinds of stories.
In Schwartz’s best shows, young characters are proxies for all of us anyway—the confused, needy, geeky, weirdo kid within that never went away. “was really a story about outsiders, and that was something that I identified with,” Schwartz said.too, was about the way “all these people who seem like they’re on the inside all feel like outsiders.” Of course,’s Miles and Alaska exude that sense of misfit loneliness too. “There’s just something about that theme that keeps bringing me back in.
