'Juneteenth: Journey to Freedom' will dwarf past events and even include a 200-voice choir as well as poets and modern and African dance companies.
“It’s been a place for families of African-Americans and many other cultures to come together and celebrate the different cultures that we have in our city; and this being Juneteenth, I think many other ethnicities will come and celebrate with us,” he says. “To have a centralized location to be able to provide this level and quality of programming to our community for free is absolutely incredible.
Walker has recruited more than two dozen singers, including homegrown gospel stars Brian Courtney Wilson, Kathy Taylor, Gene Moore, and Mary Griffin, as well as noted choral conductor V. Michael McKay. Two choirs will perform, one of them more than 200 members strong, as will poets and modern and African dance companies. An LED video wall will show dramatizations of key historical events.
“Journey to Freedom” will begin with a prelude honoring late state representative Al Edwards, author of the 1980 bill making Juneteenth a Texas state holiday; as well as Texas Sen. John Cornyn and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who were instrumental in steering through Congress the bill raising it to the national level. President Biden signed it with two days to spare.
