Two votes could be the deciding factor in who wins a seat on the Redwood City council in what has become a nail-biter of a race.
REDWOOD CITY — Just two votes separate two candidates in the race for a seat on the city council, the latest San Mateo County election results show, the first contested race since the city first moved to district elections three years ago.
Though there are three open seats on the council, only the race between Sturken and Becker is contested. Former mayor and current council member Diane Howard won her re-election to District 6 handily against opponent Jerome Madigan with 75% of the vote. And in District 5, Kaia Eakin ran unopposed, garnering 1,823 votes.
Sturken believes Redwood City voters are ready for new, younger voices on the city council, a common refrain on the campaign trail. He has lived in the city for four years and has served on the Redwood City Transportation Advisory Committee, where he advocated expanding the city’s bike network, and is currently a member on the Redwood City Planning Commission.
