The APC in the film was created from a modified Hunslet ATT77 "Air Tug" Aircraft Towing Tractor. Bought by the production team, the vehicle was then heavily modified to become the APC we all know and love today. For high-altitude and space flight, the aircraft also comes equipped with "ramrockets" to reach speeds over Mach 12. The craft is armed with rockets held in fixed and retractable rocket pods and a Gatling cannon to the front. The ship can be manually piloted or remotely controlled. It also looks incredibly cool. So, do we have anything like it today?
As for its propulsion systems, examples of turbofan-operated VTOL aircraft exist today. The primary example being the Lockheed Martin F-35. Technology similar to the craft's "ramrocket" engines does exist and is, as the name suggests, a hybrid between a rocket and a ramjet.
The system apparently works by drawing in the native atmosphere at the base and sides of the tower. This is then compressed by turbines and passed through a series of "processors" that heat and ionize the air. This splits the atmosphere into its constituent atoms, which are sorted by magnets and recombined into the desired elements at a preset concentration.
