Rick and Morty season 7 is supposed to tell a major overarching story, but Justin Roiland's exit may cause this to be significantly delayed.
Justin Roiland's firing from Rick and Morty has been huge, and his exit could cause season 7's biggest story to be delayed. Rick and Morty mostly consists of comedic episodic adventures, but each season tends to have a loosely overarching story sprinkled throughout. Rick and Morty season 7 was meant to be different, heavily focusing on a canon storyline - something that will probably no longer happen due to Justin Roiland being fired.
Justin Roiland is the co-creator of Rick and Morty, as well as the voice actor for the titular duo and a plethora of other side characters. Although the series has been heavily associated with him, Justin Roiland was fired from Rick and Morty after season 6 due to various charges and allegations coming to light. The series will continue without Roiland, with Rick and Morty being recast in season 7.
Rick and Morty has a trend where the overarching storylines are mostly explored in season premieres and season finales. This was expected to be the case for Rick and Morty season 7 as well, with Rick Prime making his grand return in the premiere. However, season 7's premiere will potentially now have to address why Rick and Morty's voices changed instead, as it would be odd not to explain the difference right from the start.
Will Season 7 Actually Tell The Rick Prime Story? Even before Justin Roiland's firing, nobody was sure if season 7 would actually tell the story of main Rick and Morty villain Rick Prime. Rick and Morty seasons 5 and 6 teased a heavy emphasis on serialized storytelling, only for both seasons to mostly focus on one-off episodes. The exact same thing may happen for Rick & Morty season 7, with the season finale continuing to tease that the Rick Prime storyline will feature in season 8.
Now that the Rick Prime storyline will probably get delayed due to Roiland's exit, this makes the Rick Prime story even less likely to appear in Rick and Morty season 7. Canon stories have been ignored for no real reason in the past, so the fallout from Roiland leaving may push the Rick and Morty team to simply hold off on Rick Prime until season 8.
