Katie Porter + her whiteboard did it again!
“Do you know what this number is?” Porter asked Wednesday as she wrote “$13 million” on her whiteboard, where she had just tracked a more than $500 increase in Revlimid's price per pill from 2005 to present. Alles answered that he thought Porter was “referring to [his] compensation in some way.”
Porter confirmed that she was referencing his 2017 compensation as CEO of Celgene, noting it was a vast sum compared to what the average American makes or the average senior gets in Social Security, writing on her whiteboard it was 360 times what the social safety net pays out. Porter dug deeper, breaking out a $2.1 million bonus Alles received, which she linked to increasing the price of Revlimid.
Porter then added a fourth figure to her board, $500,000, the figure she said lawmakers determined Alles had received in bonus during the last two years just from increasing the price of Revlimid. “In fact, you personally received half of a — half a million dollars,” Porter said, putting her glasses on, “just by tripling the price of Revlimid.”
“So to recap here, the drug didn’t get any better, the cancer patients didn’t get any better,” Porter continued. “You just got better at making money. You just refined your skills at price gouging.”
