Kemi Badenoch holds the standard grab-bag of right-wing ideas – dislike of Europe, distrust of net zero, an aversion to state interference in the economy is going. Needless to say, it will be a disaster. And that disaster is likely to start, and ultimately end, with
Badenoch will prove a very attractive prospect to party members. Whenever a party falls out of power, it makes the same mistake. It’s more of a psychological problem than a political one, a weird kink of the dogmatic mind under conditions of pain and uncertainty. Instead of thinking rationally about what went wrong and what needs to be corrected, it simply digs deeper into its ideological bunker.
The sensible answer to that question is very simple. It is to reject Reform both organisationally and politically. It is to return to being a centre-right party. This is obviously true morally, but it is also true as a matter of basic strategy. The Conservatives have just been defeated by the centre-left, not by the populist right. They are second to Labour in 219 seats and the Liberal Democrats in 64 seats.
