Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton attacked state conservatives in his first remarks after the Senate acquitted him on charges of corruption and abuse of office, hinting at a potential run to replace Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).
Paxton commented on a Senate 2026 bid in an interview with Tucker Carlson on Wednesday, saying “everything’s on the table” for him when asked about the potential run.“I can’t think of a single thing he’s accomplished for our state or even for the country, let alone the fact that we have a massive invasion into our state, and he doesn’t speak out against it,” Paxton said in the interview posted on X, speaking about Cornyn. “I’ve never seen him propose legislation that significantly affects it.
On Saturday, Sept. 16., the Texas Senate acquitted Paxton of 16 articles of impeachment alleging corruption and bribery after a two-week impeachment trial. Paxton was impeached and suspended in May but was immediately reinstated as Texas Attorney General. Cornyn, who is a former Texas attorney general, was reelected to a fourth term in the Texas Senate in 2020. Cornyn called the allegations against Paxton “very deeply disturbing” earlier this month, adding the trial was “painful to watch.”
The attorney general was called on to resign over alleged drunkenness while leading the House in May, hours before the Texas House committee announced its investigation into Paxton’s office. The attorney general said he doesn't think his legal troubles are over, with a looming hearing in October over an indictment on securities fraud charges eight years ago.
