Psychology plays such a big part when it comes to occasions like this afternoon and, in terms of Old Firm clashes, I believe this is the biggest in well over a decade. Put it this way – if Rangers are celebrating at 2pm then the psychological blow on Celtic will be every bit as important as the actual result.
Crucially, going into that match, we had a team packed with winners. Guys who could handle the pressure and deliver such as Davis, Kris Boyd, Davie Weir, Steven Whittaker, Madjid Bougherra, myself and Pedro Mendes Above all that was the main man, Walter Smith. As much as Walter had that steeliness, seriousness and could be scary at times, he also had the calmness in the important moments to get the critical messages across in the midst of bedlam.
He shouted me in and was leaning back in his chair, arms folded, watching me walk towards the couch. I swear, just as my backside was about to hit that seat he announced: ‘You’re playing, get the f*** out’. It’s probably unfair on the Belgian – and too early. But you can’t argue he has that presence and the clarity in the way he has communicated since he came in. He’s got so much more out of this group of players who were struggling before he came in. Now it’s about getting that bit extra out of them this afternoon. Win this and they are in complete control in the final weeks of the campaign.
