Throughout the last few days, Love has used his own experience of being in the protocols to help the teammates who are there now.
Kevin Love and the Cavaliers beat the Raptors by 45 points on Sunday night. Seven Cavaliers are in the NBA's health and safety protocols. Love and Lauri Markkanen, who were in the protocols in early November, are helping those players work their way back onto the court.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Kevin Love has been the savvy veteran leader on the Cavaliers throughout the last few years. But in the last week or two, he’s led in a slightly different capacity.
“The league has really gone through it. Like you said, it’s not just us. It’s been every team,” Love said. “Look at the Raptors. They’re probably one of the top two or three teams in the past week or two that have been hit the hardest. I think, obviously the team that looks by the numbers been hit the hardest Chicago Bulls. But you know, it’s everybody.
“I think Lauri and myself, having gone through it in early November, I think for sure it’s just a way of empathizing with guys.” Players can exit the protocols either after 10 days or getting negative PCR tests twice in a 24-hour period. While those players are recovering, the players who are not in the protocols have had to step their games up. Love and Garland each had 22 points on Sunday night and Markkanen added 20.
Love attributed the way players are stepping up to the culture that the Cavs are continuing to build this season.
