Mali's influential protest leader, Mahmoud Dicko, quits politics after meeting with members of military coup who have promised fresh elections in the West African country

It's unclear why Mahmoud Dicko, the Saudi-trained imam and the figurehead of anti-government protests, decided to end his innings with politics after a military coup ousted President Keita.

The mood in the capital Bamako was calm throughout the day and junta leaders urged people and officials to return to life as normal. In the Malian capital Bamako, Goita said after meeting top civil servants that he was the leader of the NCSP that has seized power. A Malian security source identified three of the other junta leaders who appeared alongside Wague as Colonels Sadio Camara, Malick Diaw, and Modibo Kone.

Mali has struggled to regain stability since a Tuareg uprising in 2012 that was hijacked by armed militants.
