test, sit-out during certain extracurricular activities, or separate from their peers during lunch, in an effort to ensure the safety of staff and students while complying with the updated guidance.— which align with updated federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines — limit quarantines to when COVID is believed to be most infectious, state health department officials said.

“We know that students benefit from in-person learning, and safely continuing in-person instruction remains a priority,” said Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli in a Jan. 12. “These recommendations will help local health departments and schools in handling COVID-19 cases and exposures among students and staff to ensure healthy outcomes for all.”

“If it’s still positive, then we would take other action as advised by the Department of Health,” such as keeping the student home for the remaining five days, said Marguerite Leuze, Executive Director of Health Services for Newark Public Schools. That might be an unpopular policy for some parents, but Leuze said the district’s main “concern is always that students will be safe, the family will be safe, that we are doing best scientific practices for the students and staff, and that we continue to move forward because this has been a change frequently throughout the COVID experience.”
