A lone ornament hangs on a branch of a pine tree that was planted by the Trees For Kingwood organization recently on Kingwood Drive. The charity hopes to plant between 1,000-2,000 trees every year to fill in the gaps where trees have died from flooding, disease, or hurricanes.Urban sprawl can be the culprit often blamed for deforestation, but not in Kingwood.
To restore the many affected green spaces to their original state will take the concerted volunteer effort, funding and years of work, but it’s a commitment made by a dozen or more of the homeowner associations and community groups that make up Trees for Kingwood. In November, the group planted another 100 trees in cooperation with the City of Houston’s Urban Forestry who provided the trees.
Trees for Kingwood was launched in 2021. Joyce Chambers, on the board of the organization, said the group planted 700 trees last year and their goal was 1,000 this year. Arriving at the 10,000 trees number is no guestimate. Each village in Kingwood has its own association that maintains neighborhood trails, Chambers explained.
