Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has long advocated time on the training pitch with his players - and the importance of the last few months could now prove pivotal
Jurgen Klopp has never made any secret of what he regards one of the fundamental basics of any success with Liverpool.
Klopp has long been an advocate of the importance of time on the training pitch, where the repetition of drills, patterns and routines become second nature to players. And Liverpool's strong start to the season has been in part due to the Reds coaching staff having had the freedom to work consistently with the squad without too many distractions over the past two months.
The results indicate Liverpool have used that time wisely, not least given there has been a whole new midfield to bed in. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have been in place since the start of pre-season, while Wataru Endo arrived shortly before the second game at home to Bournemouth. Ryan Gravenberch's deadline-day arrival last week means the 21-year-old will have some catching up to do.
Not until the first week in January is there time for a definite breather, with there also the luxury of a weekend off later the same month due to the staggered mid-season Premier League break. However, the second half of the season after the World Cup - a tournament during which many of the Liverpool squad took part in a warm-weather training camp in Dubai - saw the Reds take only two points fewer than second-placed Arsenal. And in the last seven weeks of the campaign, when Klopp switched to a box midfield to help bring more out of Trent Alexander-Arnold in a hybrid right-back role, Liverpool had only two midweek games, one of which was at Anfield.
