The story has made international headlines as the two parents, who are now divorced, face charges of neglect of a dependent in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, six years after prosecutors say they abandoned their adoptive daughter in Lafayette.Parents plead not guilty to abandoning daughter. Kristine Barnett confronted the girl after catching her pour household cleaner into her coffee, Michael Barnett said. During the Dr. Oz show, Barnett said this was done because they believed the girl was not a child and was a way for her to get help for mental illness. He says she was admitted to an inpatient facility where"she was under 24-hour observation and care" and where Barnett said staff agreed she was an adult.
“It was a big move for our family and one that we knew was coming for Jacob,” Kristine Barnett told the IndyStar that year. “We knew Jacob would exhaust the curriculum in Indiana, and we knew that he would need to go to another school one day. We love Indiana, and Indiana will always be a big part of us in our hearts.”
