Whether they’re buying or selling, the SF Giants just need to do something to invigorate this team over the final weeks of the 2022 season.
The Giants had two All-Stars this season. Both are on one-year contracts. They’re mercenaries who seem more likely to leave San Francisco at the end of the year than stay. This isn’t anything against Carlos Rodon or Joc Pederson, but how can Giants fans expect to be invested in a team doing the minimum to invest in the Major League product?
So sell everyone — Rodon and Pederson and anyone else who seems short-lived for the team, which should be a lengthy list. Concede this forgettable season, bring up some young guys from the minors, and let’s have some fun watching the kids give it a go over the final few months. Being a Major League veteran and playing the Giants’ style of ball seems to suck the fun out of the game for all parties involved.
That or the Giants can act like a big-market team and push their chips to the middle of the table — buy, buy, buy. Sell all those prospects that will probably never amount to anything at the highest level and land yourself some players that can not only make up the difference in the National League Wild Card race over the next two months but can also give this team a shot at winning a few rounds once those playoffs start.Baseball has seen the emotion sucked out of it over the last 20 years.
Normally, I say “don’t do something bold and reckless” in a column discussing possible roster moves, but I am advocating the exact opposite here.This Giants team has been flatlining for weeks. They have until 3 p.m. Tuesday to show proof of life.
