LA Councilmember Monica Rodriguez says City Hall efforts to punish disgraced Kevin de Leon would harm Latino residents.
Weeks ago, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to censure council members Kevin de León, Gil Cedillo and Nury Martinez for their racist comments in a backroom conversation in 2021 that was secretly taped and leaked in October. But in reality the council has no clear power to follow up with any punishment.
Some of de León’s constituents have posted pictures on social media of mailers they got from de Leon inviting them to a holiday tree lighting event, without a disclaimer that he paid to mail them. Rodriguez asked the committee to delay the motion and “not impetuously move toward making decisions.” She called the restricting of the councilmember’s discretionary funds “neither responsible nor necessary.”
She cautioned against the council trying to “extrapolate more than what our power affords us in these positions.” The ad hoc committee also heard from Jennifer Barraza, de León’s chief of staff. Barraza did not address de León’s refusal to resign or his absence from council meetings for nearly two months, but called the motion seeking consequences for censured councilmembers an “attempt to disempower a majority Latino district.”
