A NEW study has revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers are the most popular Major League sports team in America. Out of the 150 teams in the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS and NHL that were analyzed, the Lakers took the crown, closely followed by their rivals the Golden State Warriors. analyzed each team’s number of followers, mentions, engagement rate, average likes and average attendance. Each team was given a score out of 10 for each factor, which was then totalled to give a score on the popularity index.
In very close second are Lakers rivals the Golden State Warriors, missing out by less than half a point. They do boast the highest follower count in American sports with 26.3 million, however they average 101,000 likes per post which drops them crucial points that leave them as the second most popular team.The New York Yankees are the third most popular, despite being the most accomplished American sports team with 27 World Series wins.
