Artist and designer Sarah Nsikak is building an independent label with the intention of celebrating African storytelling and culture. Her latest pieces turn symbols of suffering into things of beauty.
Born and raised in Oklahoma, Nsikak studied psychology and initially pursued a career in art therapy. But after completing her master’s in 2014, she began designing her own clothes using textile waste and upcycled vintage garments. Her grandmother, who was once a seamstress in the family’s Nigerian village, taught her to sew when she was young.
Nsikak also hopes that those who commission and wear her garments internalize not just the Herero women’s story but also the narratives that she weaves into them. In fact, her approach seems to be taking hold in the industry at large. As the plights of the world continue to pile on, clothes and the designers who make them can be vehicles for change, whether that means shifting business practices to be more sustainable and inclusive or spotlighting untold stories and underrepresented people.
Educating and inspiring others about African culture is essential to Nsikak’s project. “I never heard the stories of African people in school, and I’m still a bit resentful that I took on such a Western worldview. African stories have been stolen by mainstream culture and exploited. My parents didn’t want to teach me and my siblings Ibibio, their native language, out of fear that we would develop accents and go through the same kind of discrimination they experienced in this country.
