Sir Keir Starmer has faced criticism from the left of the Labour Party for backtracking on many of the pledges he made during his 2020 leadership campaign
The 10 pledges Sir Keir made during his leadership campaign included backing public ownership of industries such as railways and energy, increasing taxation on the highest earners and advancing a“Given the scale of the crises and inequality facing Britain, these policies are more vital and popular now than ever,” a Momentum spokesperson said.
“Yet today, his promises lie in tatters, ditched in favour of the reheated Third-Way Blairism typified by these latest, vapid ‘missions’. “To avoid charges of serial dishonesty and ensure a Labour Government actually faces up to the scale of the wreckage it will inherit from the Tories, Starmer should change course, listen to Party Conference and lay out a bold vision of a transformed country which delivers for the many, not the few.”
Sir Keir defended his decision to renege on many of his leadership pledges on Thursday morning, telling BBC Radio 4’sprogramme in a heated exchange that he has had to “adapt some of them to the circumstances we find ourselves in”.
