Labour hopes to raise £1.7bn through its private school VAT plan – but the ASCL warns that still isn't enough to avert a looming crisis of staff shortages and funding deficits

Labour hopes to raise £1.7bn through its private school VAT plan – but the ASCL warns that still isn't enough to avert a looming crisis of staff shortages and funding deficitswithin its first year in power if it wins the next general election, which it hopes will raise £1.7bn for state education.

Mr Di’lasio, a headteacher at Wales High School, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, takes over at the ASCL from his predecessor Geoff Barton on 8 April. The Institute for Fiscal Studies warned in October, following the Autumn Statement, that departments were facing real terms spending cuts of 3.4 per cent per year.

Labour has promised to spend the money raised from the VAT raid on private schools on “recruiting thousands more expert teachers, deliver mental health counselling in every school, and early language support for our youngest children”. Mr Di’lasio is making the call for increased investment in education his “number one priority”. He described it as the “golden thread to allow us to do so much more”.

Mr Di’lasio defied Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to “come and look at how schools are running right now”, adding they have been “cut back in every way, shape and form”.and there is no money for replacement classrooms or to fix roofs that leak in the rain, teachers have revealed. Labour has committed to reforming Ofsted as a priority if it wins the election, following the death of primary school headteacher Ruth Perry who took her own life after her school was downgraded.

Labour criticised for copying Tory economic policyLabour criticised for copying Tory economic policyRachel Reeves has been slammed after she said Labour would copy a key Tory economic policy. The shadow chancellor said overall public debt should fall year-on-year as a share of GDP by the fifth year of official forecasts. This policy was adopted by the Tories in November 2022. It would mean Labour can only borrow for investment but not day-to-day spending. This would limit the amount of money the government has to spend. The SNP has warned the move will "choke off economic growth and impose devastating cuts to public services". Unite the Union said the plans would mean Labour will "end up in a straitjacket of your own making." SNP economy spokesperson Drew Hendry said: "Yesterday's speech from the Shadow Chancellor confirmed what the SNP have been saying for some time now: the fiscal policies of the Tories and Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party are now indistinguishable. "Labour's decision to adopt the Tories second fiscal rule will only choke off economic growth and impose devastating cuts to public services.
