In his regular column for the Record, the SNP leader at Westminster says older Scots can't afford to lose the Winter Fuel Payment
This week the UK Labour Government is preparing to pick up to £500 from the pockets of 860,000 pensioners in Scotland. Those 860,000 people are our grans, grandads, and our parents.
I’m sorry to say that this Westminster misery builds momentum from tomorrow. Because this Tuesday morning, a vote will take place on the Labour Chancellor’s choice to cut the winter fuel payment for pensioners. Take a quick comparison of what these cuts will change from only last year. Last winter, all pensioners received a minimum of £500 in winter fuel payments per household, rising to £600 for those over 80. That included a standard winter fuel payment of £200 to £300, and a pensioner cost of living payment of £300.
That’s the political choice that Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have made. All because, according to one of their senior colleagues in Cabinet, if Labour decided to keep this payment, and keep pensioners warm this winter, it would supposedly risk a run on the pound and risk the collapse of the UK economy. Only nine weeks into government and that’s an exaggeration and an excuse worthy of the very worst of the Tories. It’s an insult to the intelligence of pensioners and the rest of us.
