Members of the new Labour Yimby group have said MPs should 'loudly and proudly' support housing projects in their areas

Members of a new Labour Yimby group are urging both MPs not to cave to an “unrepresentative minority” who are opposed to newThe Labour Yimby group – which stands for “yes in my backyard” as opposed to the Nimby ‘Not in my backyard’ – is set to hold its inaugural meeting in Westminster on Monday and already has the backing of almost two dozen MPs including former shadow Cabinet minister Emily Thornberry.

“We can’t keep giving in to pressure groups and opposing homes in exchange for an easy life,” he warned. At the 2019 general election, the Conservative Party had promised to build at least a million” new homes over their term in office, and Government analysis suggests they narrowly met this target. In February 2024, the the Conservative government announced comparable policies which they said would put “rocket boosters” on construction in new areas.

In my short time sitting on the green benches, I have lost count of the number of Tory MPs I’ve heard give speeches proudly proclaiming what they don’t want to see built in their constituencies. During this year’s elections my constituents faced a deluge of Tory leaflets warning them of the ‘threat’ of new housing if we were to be elected.

The facts are that those who oppose a local development are much more likely to write in about it than those that support it. Planning consultations inevitably end up being taken over by the voices of an unrepresentative minority. MPs inboxes are stuffed full of, often highly charged, emails from those who don’t want new things to be built.
