The 37-year-old Anthony has stayed mentally present with a career-high efficiency this season, more than three years after his career appeared to be over
EL SEGUNDO — Whenever it comes, Carmelo Anthony’s retirement won’t be an ambiguous event.
What might be most impressive about that is Anthony is poised to call the end of his career himself. He and teammate LeBron James are the only two members of the vaunted 2003 draft class left in the NBA – and Anthony’s role from the bench has supported the notion that he’s got plenty of time left. “If coming into it you’re thinking, ‘Oh I want to play 70 games or 72 games,’ you’re not going to be really locked into that,” he said. “You’ll be worried about something going wrong or this happening.”
That efficiency, of course, has its limits, and Anthony tends to wear down with long minutes or with short breaks between games. His scoring average and shooting percentage slides precipitously from his production on two days’ rest to one day to no days between games . Even though this version of Anthony weathers time well, time still takes its toll.
“I think for the most part, that overall has been the mindset, it is what it is,” he said. “You still think about it. Like, ‘What is it?’ or ‘Why?’ ‘Why is it that it hasn’t clicked the way we wanted it to click, or how we saw it, the way we imagined it to work out?’ It’s hard to answer that, but I think guys now understand the stakes of where we at, and the importance, and AD having a chance to come back down the stretch. Hopefully we can put all of that together the way we’ve been playing.
