Mensah pushed the ball ahead to Butler, who tried to drive baseline from the right side of the court but found his path cut off by an FAU defender. Butler crossed the ball back through his legs, dribbled to his left and rose up to release a prayer. The ball came off his fingertips with seven tenths of a second on the clock.
FAU scored more points, made more 3-pointers and shot the ball better than any opponent SDSU had faced in the NCAA Tournament this year, but the Aztecs survived and advanced to face Connecticut in the national championship game. The circumstances summoned flashbacks of San Diego State’s loss to Arkansas in Maui back on Nov. 23. Near the end of regulation, Butler committed a foul that allowed the Razorbacks to make free throws and cut the Aztecs’ lead to two points. Butler was trapped on the inbounds and turned the ball over. Arkansas scored a game-tying basket, then won in overtime.
“If you look at one magic moment,” Dutcher said, “I can't think of a better definition than that shot.” Many people watching might have assumed the Aztecs would draw up a play to give the final shot to guard Matt Bradley, who scored 21 points, or to forward Jaedon LeDee, who scored nine of his 12 points in the second half to help ignite the rally.
