The protest exploded when among the islanders spread the news that in the former military base Loran will be created a tent city and that on the ferry line that will shortly arrive at the port there are vehicles and equipment of the Army. In the meantime migrants wait to be transferred to other places from the island.
Italian Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on 15 September called for the intervention of the United Nations in response to the significant increase in the arrival of migrants and refugees by sea to Italy in recent days. Lampedusa's city council declared a state of emergency on 13 September evening after a 48-hour continuous influx of migrants.
