It's truly shocking
An advice service boss has likened the cost-of-living crisis to ‘living in Victorian times’ as demand for fuel and food vouchers has risen by 400%.
Chief Executive of CARH David Oglaza said: “We have had people ring up asking for a fuel voucher and you can hear their teeth chattering because they are so cold. It is like we are back in Victorian times, but this is 2022.“We had a homeless woman in our office in tears because she had been evicted and was sofa surfing and she was struggling to find somewhere to live.
He said a lot of callers were on pre-payment meters for gas and electricity, but many reported putting £20 on their key only to find their provider took half of the money immediately. “People really are having to choose whether to heat or eat, but if you have young children then you have to keep your house warm. More and more people are using credit to pay for everyday essentials, but then how are they going to pay the bill.
