Lance McCullers Jr. resumes throwing for Astros but won't be ready for opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Lance McCullers Jr. resumed a throwing program on Saturday, nearly a month after straining a muscle in his arm during a bullpen session. McCullers said he threw 30 times during a game of catch — the normal first step for a pitcher after a long shutdown. McCullers sustained his injury on Feb. 14.
McCullers already ruled himself out for opening day on March 30, but called the circumstances a"best-case scenario" after imaging revealed no damage to his ulnar collateral ligament. McCullers had the ligament repaired during Tommy John surgery in Nov. 2018.
