Brisk Lancashire reservoir walk in the shadow of Pendle Hill complete with wildlife haven and rustic pub
This week's suggested walk is a fairly short one but packs in plenty as well as ending at a much loved pub.
The route starts and finishes in the pretty village of Barley, in Pendle, and passes by reservoirs as well as farms and fields. Lots of wildlife and birds can be seen along the way, with breeding wading birds particularly visible during the summer. There are no steep gradients on the walk and much of the walk is on hard surfaced tracks or tarmac road. However, the return leg of the route crosses fields, which may become muddy in the wet weather. The middle section of the walk is along a country lane and care should be taken to ensure you are visible to drivers using the road. The route starts at Black Moss Reservoir car park and heads straight into the village before looping back round.
After the walk, the Barley Mow offers a perfect resting place after a countryside walk. The village pub is designed with a hunt-lodge style interior and is welcoming to the those stopping for a quiet drink, a hearty meal or a longer stay. Its roaring fires and outdoor seating make it ideal for any weather and its food menus, whose range includes pub classics and international cuisines, is accompanied by a range of local beers.
At 3.2 miles, the walk is among a shorter offerings and will take little over an hour to complete. It was originally drawn up by United Utilities, which manages the reservoir.
