HSBC has launched a 40-year mortgage for the first time aimed at people who are struggling to afford payments over more traditional periods due to significant interest rate hikes over the last 18 months.

There are fresh fears that Wilko could start redundancies again tomorrow - but the firm is actively looking at a bid, a union has said.

The number of mortgages being approved month-on-month dropped by 10% in July, Bank Of England figures show.
