Due to an upsurge in scammer activity, the state's anti-fraud system is increasingly freezing the accounts of Ohioans that have been flagged as suspicious, forcing account holders to spend hours on the phone.

A man walks past a "Now Hiring" sign on a window at Sherwin-Williams store, Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, in Woodmere Village, Ohio. COLUMBUS, Ohio—Three years after Ohio’s unemployment system was deluged with fraudulent claims, state officials have taken a number of steps to stop money from being paid out to scammers.

But now, there’s another problem: When the state’s beefed-up anti-fraud system flags suspicious attempts to create or access Ohioans’ unemployment accounts, the system automatically freezes those accounts. That means that, under the state’s current setup, Ohioans whose names are on those accounts have no alternative but to spend hours on the phone to unfreeze them.
