Hispanic leaders offered mixed responses around the legal peril Menendez now faces after a long career as a leading voice on issues affecting the Latino community.
As the highest-ranking Latino member in Congress called for Sen. Bob Menendez to resign Wednesday, Hispanic leaders offered mixed responses around the senator’s legal predicament after a decades-long career as a leading voice on issues affecting the Latino community.Rep.
Hispanic leaders, especially those in New Jersey, say the legal peril Menendez now faces is heartbreaking after a long career as a leading voice on issues affecting the Latino community in the state and nationally.
In the wake of this indictment, Menendez has continued to point to his ethnicity as the reason he’s now been targeted twice by law enforcement, and has also used his heritage to defend himself.“It is not lost on me how quickly some are rushing to judge a Latino and push him out of his seat,” Menendez said in a statement Friday night.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has not formally put out a statement for or against Menendez and did not respond to a request for comment. He said he’s spoken to many members of his organization that this issue is bigger than one man and is about the “future of Latino representation in Congress.”“We are disappointed and we would like to see him make a decision one way or another,” Robles said.
