Helping my young adult son move to Tacoma brings up all the feels.
For a while now, Charlie has been looking for a full-time job in his chosen field of fitness, in a place and with a salary that fulfills him. He finally found one, and now he’s ready to play an adult version of the childhood game “timber” — without anyone’s open arms behind him to catch him when he falls.
The day is glorious, and I’m stalling about getting back into the leg cramp-inducing car. I instead knock on Charlie’s window. He opens the door and takes out his earbuds. He looks at me and says, “So at what point do I cut you off?” and we both laugh. The next few days are hectic, allowing little time for reflection. Yet every so often we find it — not always in words, but in just the three of us being together.
For every trail he’s completed, he’s bought a patch. He thinks he has 100, but when I empty the bag of them, I count 107. I sit at the table where he and I have shared countless meals and just as many games of Scrabble and Rummikub and, for whatever reason, methodically put them in alphabetical order.I’m in awe of their sheer number, yes. But also because I’ve been going to Colorado since I was a little girl, yet most of these trails I’ve never heard of.
